US welcomes IEA decree about women’s right
US special envoy for Afghanistan Thomas West welcomed the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s (IEA) decree about a women’s right to choose to marry.
“Welcome today’s decree reinforcing a woman’s right to determine if & whom she marries,” tweeted West.
He also called on the IEA to ensure women’s rights including their right to work in media.
“At the same time, much more is needed to ensure women’s rights in every aspect of Afghan society including schools, workplaces, politics and media,” added West.
This comes after the IEA on Friday released a decree on women’s rights which said women should not be considered “property” and must consent to marriage, Reuters reported.
