U.S. Drone Strike Kills Al Qaeda Leader in Afghanistan: Pentagon
The U.S. Department of Defense said on Saturday a U.S. airstrike in Afghanistan this week killed a “high profile” al Qaeda leader who was responsible for the death of two American service members and dozens of other people at a hotel in Pakistan.
The Pentagon said in a statement the strike occurred on March 19 in Paktika province and killed Qari Yasin, a senior terrorist figure from Pakistan who had ties to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
According to the statement Yasin was also accused of involvement in a deadly attack on a bus carrying Sri Lanka’s cricket team in Lahore in 2009.
“The death of Qari Yasin is evidence that terrorists who defame Islam and deliberately target innocent people will not escape justice,” U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said in the statement.
