Afghanistan’s first-ever visit to Lord’s on Tuesday ended in a disappointment as the match against MCC was called off due to rain.
However, the visitors’ fast bowler, Shapoor Zadran shined in the match, claiming three scalps including the wickets of BB McCullum and Misbah-ul-Haq at the start of his spell.
Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, MCC looked in trouble after Brendon McCullum (5) and Misbah-ul-Haq (7) went early to Shapoor, who ended up 3/29 in his eight-over spell.
Sam Hain (76) played crucial knock, adding 88 runs for the third wicket with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (22 retired hurt) before the latter left the field with score being 105/2 in 25 overs.
Hain went past his half-century and Samit Patel provided the much needed flourish at the end, scoring 53 off 41 balls, as MCC managed to post 217/6 in the allotted 40 overs.
Gulbaddin Naib (2-47) and Rashid Khan (1-39) were the other wicket takers for Afghanistan.
In the chase, Noor Ali Zadran started the innings positively before being dismissed for 11 in the third over.
Just as Afghanistan reached 31 for one at the end of the fifth over, rain arrived and with no more play possible the match ended without a result.
