The sixth Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan (RECCA-VI) entered its second day on Friday with remarks of President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani, citing “Stopping the progress process in Muslim’s world is one of the major goals of terrorism and terrorists groups.

President Ghani once again said to consider terrorism a serious threat for region and the world; urging countries of the world to begin a join combat against terrorism in cooperation with each others.

However, RECCA is an economic summit but it seemed that security threats in the region and drabble in Kabul-Islamabad relations caused the summit rounds on security and political issues.

On the second day of RECCA-VI summit, Afghan president said to consider Asia the center of conflicts in the 21st century and hopes that Asia to not witness violence and war in the next 5 decades.

“Terrorist networks seek to take the Islamic world to a place where everything is stopped. They want to ensure killing innocent people and destroying cultural heritages,” President Ghani said.

President Ghani also noted that despite Afghans wound of terrorism but still stands against this phenomenon.

“We suffered 40 years and still stand and fight against terrorism. Our message to those who supports terrorism is this to come on and understand the future and create a joint cooperation,” President Ghani added.

Meanwhile, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, the Minister for Interior Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran was said to consider terrorism a serious threat for the whole humanity and said there is no good or bad terrorists.

“Escalating violence from the south to the northern parts of Afghanistan has increased the concerns of the region coincides with the emergence of new terrorist groups. Terrorism is a serious threat not only for the region but also for the entire humanity and we are committed to a world free of violence,” Iranian interior minister, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said.

At the same time, Indian foreign minister said to consider the implementation of regional programs impossible without eliminating the threat posed by terrorism.

“We cannot be successful in implementation of regional projects until the issue of terrorism and extremism in Afghanistan have not defeated,” Indian representative in RECCA summit said.

After the fall of Taliban regime, many summits have been held for Afghanistan especially economic summits, but according to analysts Afghanistan has failed to use the summits so far.

Afghanistan’s problems caused more damage to Pakistan than 3 wars with India: Durrani

Islamabad’s special envoy for Afghanistan Asif Durrani said on Wednesday that Pakistan has suffered more due to Afghanistan’s internal situation than Pakistan has suffered in three wars with India in terms of blood spilt and finances drained.

Durrani said at a one-day International Conference titled “Pakistan in the Emerging Geopolitical Landscape”, which was organized by the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) and the German Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), that over 80,000 Pakistanis died in the two decades of the War on Terror and that his country was still counting its dead and injured.

“After the withdrawal of NATO forces, it was hoped that peace in Afghanistan would bring peace to the region. However, such expectations were short-lived,” he said.

He also stated that attacks by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant group on Pakistan’s border areas increased by 65 percent, while suicide attacks increased by 500 percent.

“The TTP’s enhanced attacks on Pakistan while using Afghan soil have been a serious concern for Pakistan. Another worrying aspect is the participation of Afghan nationals in these attacks,” he said.

Durrani also said Pakistan had suffered geopolitically since the Soviet Union invaded the neighboring country.

“The post-9/11 world order has negatively impacted Pakistan. Apart from losing 80,000 citizens’ lives, including 8,000 law enforcement agency personnel, the country’s economic opportunity cost is estimated at $150 billion,” Durrani said.

Talking about the future outlook for Pakistan in the regional context, Durrani said that while “our eastern neighbor is likely to continue with its anti-Pakistan pursuits, the western border poses an avoidable irritant in the short to medium term.”

However, he said Pakistan can overcome its difficulties with Afghanistan, including the TTP challenge.
