Obama rethinks troops level in Afghanistan
US President Barack Obama is rethinking about troops level in Afghanistan before leaving the office.
Obama’s former special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, James Dobbins says that President Obama will not decide to decrease troops level beside considering the situation of US troops in Afghanistan.
“I don’t see any drawdowns” in the near future, said James Dobbins, Obama’s former special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan. He predicted that Obama would leave the decision to the next president.
“They are just hoping that things hold together and they won’t have to face a decision on whether to actually implement the force reduction they’re talking about until late summer, early fall, by which time the administration will be on its last legs,” Dobbins said.
The setbacks have been a strategic and public relations nightmare for Obama, whose ability to keep his promises to end U.S. involvement in the wars he inherited in Iraq and Afghanistan are now in doubt.
President Obama had previously planned to reduce the number of troops left in Afghanistan to about 1,000 by the time he left office in January 2017.
An earlier statement from the US National Security Council said the change in policy was the “result of an extensive, months-long review”, and after Mr Obama had consulted “with his full national security team and our Afghan partners”.
“This announcement in no way changes the fact that our combat mission in Afghanistan has ended, and we will continue to undertake only two narrow missions: counter terrorism and training, advising, and assisting our Afghan partners,” the statement went on.
In Afghanistan, there is recent evidence that U.S.-backed forces have, in fact, stirred the “local resentments” Obama intended to avoid.
In the meantime, US Senator John McCain was said to consider the situation of Afghanistan alarming.
However, the military and political analysts have different views on presence if international troops in Afghanistan.
“We currently need the support of the international community. But a proper strategy should be taken regarding this issue,” said Rahmatullah Bezhan Poor, political analyst.
The apparent White House rethink has been prompted by a confluence of factors: The Taliban’s capture of Kunduz few months ago, the group’s biggest prize since it was removed from power by the U.S.-led invasion in 2001; the fact the militants are more spread out across Afghanistan than at any point since 2001; the continued presence of al-Qaeda in Afghanistan’s mountains; and inroads being made by the Islamic State, a group whose tactics and brutality the world is becoming increasingly familiar with in Iraq, Syria, and elsewhere.
