Addressing a ceremony to mark the National Day of Afghan Defense and Security Forces on Thursday, President Ashraf Ghani said that negligence is unacceptable in the battlefield, insisting the nation is “victorious” in war and peace.
Ghani said the government will make joint efforts to succeed in the ongoing war. “Afghanistan is not gifted to us. We earned the freedom and independency with sacrifices of our nation.”
“Peace is our desire, but war is our present reality,” he said. “Negligence in the battleground is not acceptable and we must be prepared for legitimate defense and fight against the enemies.”
The other main participants of the event were Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, Defense Minister Tariq Shah Bahrami, Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak, Intelligence Chief Masoom Stanekzai and former security ministers.
Healing the government’s peace proposal to the Taliban, Abdullah said: “We have delivered a clear message of peace that we want peace and ready for negotiations.”
“The Afghanistan enemies have imposed the ongoing war on us. We dont want war but will bravely and decisively defend our people and country,” Bahrami said.
Wais Barmak said that the government’s fight against terrorism is “legitimate” and they will continue defending the country.
NDS Chief Massoum Stanikzai, meanwhile, said that they have been exposed to ongoing war. “We must win this war,” he insisted. “We fight for the sake of peace.”
At the event, President Ghani promoted the Army Chief of Staff, Sharif Yaftali from Lieutenant General to General. Some other officers from security agency were also promoted and given medals. Families of fallen soldiers were given cash by the government.
