(Last Updated On: April 30, 2019)

The U.S. Special Envoy for Afghan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad visited Islamabad from April 29 to 30 where he requested and received support for the need to accelerate intra-Afghan dialogue as well as a reduction in violence, the U.S. Embassy said in a statement on Tuesday.

During his two-day visit, Khalilzad met with Pakistani officials including Pakistan Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood and the country’s Chief of Army Staff Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa and discussed the Afghan peace process, the statement said.

Meanwhile, ambassador Khalilzad has expressed his appreciation for Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan’s recent remarks in support of the Afghan peace process and his vision for stability in the region, the statement added.

“Ambassador Khalilzad reiterated that an end to the war will bring long overdue peace and stability for Afghans and an independent Afghanistan that precludes it from being used by terrorists to attack the United States or any other country,” the statement asserted.
