Karzai ‘strongly supports’ education for girls

Afghan girls should return to school as soon as possible, former president Hamid Karzai said in an interview on Monday, stressing this is a cause he strongly supports.

Speaking to Turkish broadcaster Haberturk, Karzai said Afghanistan will not be a prosperous country without educated women.

“We will not give up on that,” he said.

Most schools in the capital Kabul closed after the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) came into power last month.

Secondary schools for boys reopened last week but not for girls.

In their statement at the time, the IEA said: “All male teachers and students should attend their educational institutions.”

IEA officials have promised that girls will be able to study – but only in segregated classrooms.

They pledge to “work hard” on girls’ high school education, appoint women to cabinet positions and have vowed to build a “positive and good” relationship with the United States.
