Indonesian President Arrives in Kabul for Official Visit

(Last Updated On: January 29, 2018)

Indonesian President Joko Widodo arrived in Kabul on a formal visit on Monday.

The visiting president was welcomed by Second Vice President, Sarwar Danish, at the Hamid Karzai International Airport.

President Ashraf Ghani welcomed his counterpart at the presidential palace.

Flag of the two countries had already been erected on major roads of Kabul City.

The two leaders will appear in a joint press conference after holding bilateral and multilateral meetings.

Widodo visits Kabul after he met with Pakistani officials in Islamabad, where he told Pakistan’s President Mamnoon Hussian that his country could play a role in the Afghan peace process.

He suggested the formation of a committee of religious scholars from Indonesia, Pakistan and Afghanistan to promote peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.

This comes after a delegation of Afghanistan’s High Peace Council (HPC) visited Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, about two months ago with a mission to involve the country in efforts aimed at ending the Afghan war.
