Najibullah Ahmadzai, chairman of the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) on Wednesday accepted that a number of the Commission’s commissioners have launched efforts to dismiss him from his position.
Recently reports emerged that five commissioners from the IEC have called for Ahmadzai to be fired over a range of issues including poor performance and misuse of authority.
“The [commissioners] were forced, if they intended to write bad things about me they should have written it ten months or at least one month ago,” Ahmadzai told Ariana News.
He accused the presidential palace for encouraging and forcing IEC commissioners to sign a letter calling for his dismissal.
“I’m receiving contradictory messages quoting the President which is quite unacceptable. I respect President Ashraf Ghani and I will not hesitate to sacrifice my life for the national interest and improvement of Afghanistan,” he said.
But the office of President’ Ghani denied to make a comment about allegations of interference in the work of the IEC.
Ahmadzai also warned that the current situation within the IEC will make the upcoming elections impossible.
“We need a united team to organize the elections and if the current situation continues there are possibility of changes in the election timeline,” he asserted.
