The Office of the Political Deputy of the Prime Minister announced that a commission has been set up on the fight against intoxicants and narcotics.

Maulawi Abdul Kabir, the political deputy of the Prime Minister, said in a meeting on Saturday that the purpose of creating a high commission is to fight against intoxicants and narcotics across the country, to find alternative crops for farmers and to treat drug addicts.

In the meeting, Abdulhaq Akhund, deputy interior minister for counter-narcotics, emphasized that poppy fields have been entirely destroyed and a large number of drug dealers have been arrested.

He added that the Islamic Emirate has acted successfully against drugs and the international community also acknowledges this success.

According to a United Nations report, opium poppy cultivation declined by 95% in Afghanistan last year.

The fight against drugs and providing alternative livelihoods for farmers was one of the key topics for discussion at the third UN-sponsored international meeting on Afghanistan in Doha.
