HPC Urges Relocation of Taliban’s Qatar Office

(Last Updated On: October 24, 2017)

Officials in the Afghanistan’s High Peace Council (AHPC) urged on Tuesday the government to close Taliban’s office in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

“After the allegations against Qatar, the National Unity Government should reconsider about Taliban’s office in Qatar,” Abdul Khabir Oqchon Deputy Head of AHPC said.

Oqchon added that Taliban’s political office doesn’t have to be in Qatar, but emphasized that an address is needed for continuing peace efforts with the insurgents group.

He further said the government must relocate Taliban’s office “to a third country” based on an agreement between the Kabul government and the militants.

“We should open their office in a third country. The country must be able to host the armed opposition groups unbiasedly but we haven’t seen the move by the government yet,” he stated.

This comes as earlier reports emerged that the Trump administration is pushing for the Taliban’s Qatar-based office to be closed down after years of failed peace talks.
