HPC Calls Taliban for ‘Religious Debate’ With Afghan Ulema

(Last Updated On: March 11, 2018)

In reaction to Taliban’s opposition to an upcoming peace conference of religious scholars in Jakarta, the Afghanistan High Peace Council (HPC) has called Taliban for ‘religious debate’ with Afghan Islamic scholars.

The conference of religious scholars from Afghanistan, Indonesia and Pakistan to be hosted by Indonesia, aimed at seeking a solution to the “imposed” war in Afghanistan.

According to the Jakarta Globe, the peace conference of religious scholars is scheduled for March 15-19.

However, the Taliban in a statement alleged that the meeting is a “misleading move”, urging the involved countries to boycott the conference.

In reaction, the High Peace Council said that the government will not boycott the meeting.

“We call on the Taliban to allow their scholars having a debate with Afghanistan ulema and religious scholars of other Islamic countries,” said HPC Spokesman, Sayed Ehsan Tahiry.

This comes as the Ulema Council of Afghanistan also stressed on attending the peace conference. “We will attend peace conferences at any cost and we invite the Taliban and other groups involved in Afghanistan war [to that meeting],” said Basir Haqqani, a member of the council.
