Gov’t Servants in Laghman ‘Exchange’ Salaries into Pakistani Rupees

Residents in eastern Laghman province say the government servants exchange their salaries to Pakistani currency and using it in Afghan markets.

Over last two decades, Pakistani currency circulating in a number of provinces of Afghanistan including Laghman.

The government has taken steps to counter the flow of rupees and pave the ground for Afghani, but so far it has not succeed significantly and Pakistani rupees still being used mostly in east and southern parts of the country.

“The government employees receiving their salary and exchanging into Kaldar [Pakistani rupees] and then buying things,” said Ahmad, a resident of the provincial capital Mehterlam.

 “People are not buying much in Afghani because everyone has Pakistani rupees,” said Sheman, a resident of Mehterlam.

The Central Bank of Afghanistan (Da Afghanistan Bank) also confirmed the issue.

“The east and southern provinces are close to neighbor Pakistan; hence, foreign currency is being used in these provinces,” Said Central Bank’s Spokesman, Emal Hashor.

The Interior Ministry; however, said that they are prepared to cooperate with Central Bank in regard.

“If Central Bank asks for help, we are prepared to cooperate,” said the Interior Ministry Acting Spokesman, Najib Danish.
