presidential-palace-1432369865While thousands of protesters were holding a rally in Kabul on reroute of a power line, the Afghan Presidential Palace (ARG) released a statement on Monday hoping the demonstration end peacefully.

“holding free assemblies and peaceful protests as per the law is of the basic rights of the citizens of Afghanistan,” the statement said.

The statement added that the National Unity Government respects people’s views and demands and it is committed to balanced development and growth in the country.

This comes as most of the demonstrators who were chanting “Justice” on Monday demonstration were accusing the government for discrimination for rerouting the transmission line from Bamyan to Salang.

While the government says the reroute of the transmission line goes back to the cabinet of the previous administration.

Meanwhile, the statement continues that the government is committed to supply electricity for Bamyan and therefore it suspended the 500kV project for six months though it was finalized in 2013.

“The President assigned a committee to utilize all means and seek every resource to ensure electricity supply for Bamyan,” the statement said.

Earlier, the government announced that it will supply 300MW of power for Bamyan by 2018 against the scheduled 30MW which was due to be supplied by 2023, but the demonstrators rejected the demand saying Salang route is our “red line”.

At the statement the government further says that in the past two weeks the Afghan government has spared no efforts in reaching out to the protesters to hear their views and engage them in discussions, but they have always rejected the invitations by the government.

Kabul residents were surprised seeing the government has blocked the roads to the center of the city with shipping containers during the night.

Thousands of governmental employees, shopkeepers and ordinary people could not reach to their works on Monday as the main roads to the city was closed by police forces over the night.
