Ghani Visits Helmand To Assess Security Situation

(Last Updated On: July 27, 2017 12:22 pm)

President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday morning travelled to the volatile Helmand province in south of Afghanistan.

A statement issued by the presidential palace said that the aim of Ghani’s visit to Helmand is to review the security situation and meet the families of martyred and wounded soldiers.

The visit comes after an American airstrike killed several members of the Afghan security forces last Friday in the Gerishk district of Helmand province. The U.S. Forces in Afghanistan called it “unfortunate incident” and promised an investigation.

Helmand is among the volatile provinces in southern Afghanistan where a heavy fighting is going on between the Afghan security forces and the Taliban militants since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.
