According to a decree released by the presidential palace on Friday, the order was issued to prevent administrative gap and the issue of parallel bodies within the Olympic Committee.
The order requires the Committee to organize an election and select its head as soon as possible.
In addition, it requires the Committee to appoint a delegation to conduct a transparent election under the International Olympic Committee’s Charter and supervision.
Furthermore; the decree discredits any election held without the international oversight in the past.
Last month, President Ghani met Sheikh Ahmed Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, the president of Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), at the sideline of the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan.
During the meeting, the president of OCA warned suspension of Afghanistan’s participation in Asian Games if the national Olympic situation is not improved.
The National Olympic Committee has been led by two presidents for the past two years, each claiming to be the body’s head.
The International Olympic Committee recognizes one of the Committees which is led by Zahir Aghbar while Mahmoud Hanif is recognized by the government.
Before issuing the decree, Ghani appointed Mr. Aghbar as head of Afghanistan’s Consulate in Munich city of Germany, but he has told it is not finalized yet if he is accepting the position or not.
