Ghalibaf says to solve Iran’s social issues, a wall should be built on border with Afghanistan

Ghalibaf attributed some of the crimes and social issues in Iran to the presence of undocumented immigrants.

Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf, one of the candidates for the presidential elections of Iran, says all the serious social issues originate from the eastern part of the country, and a wall should be built on the border with Pakistan and Afghanistan to ensure security.

Speaking in a debate broadcast on Thursday by Iran’s state TV, Ghalibaf attributed some of the crimes and social issues in Iran to the presence of undocumented immigrants.

He emphasized that illegal citizens have caused serious social problems in the areas of drugs, employment and divorce.

“All the serious social issues we see originate from the eastern part of the country. We should completely wall our eastern border on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border to establish security there,” Ghalibaf stressed.

Earlier, he had said in a TV interview if he won the election, he would close Iran’s eastern borders to illegal immigrants.

A number of experts, however, called the plans of the candidates for the presidential elections of Iran as an anti-immigrant campaign.

Earlier, another candidate for the Iranian presidential election, Masoud Pezeshkian, also said that he would close the border with Afghanistan if he won.

Following the crash of the helicopter carrying Ebrahim Raisi, the eighth president of Iran, the 14th term of Tehran’s presidential election will be held one year ahead on July 28, 2024.
