According to Deutsche Welle (DW), security agencies received warnings from multiple intelligence sources several months ahead of time, as a result the embassy evacuated its staff from parts of the building before the attack takes place.
The embassy building was largely destroyed in the attack that left at least 150 dead and scores others wounded.
DW reported that the driver had fake papers, but was stopped at the gate by an Afghan security guard, who phoned the embassy to see if the truck was expected. The driver then detonated the bomb.
Following the bombing, Germany temporarily suspended its controversial deportation scheme of rejected migrants.
