The European Union office of Kabul has expressed deep concerns over increased violence against journalists in Afghanistan.

“The European Union is very concerned by the high increase in violence against journalists in Afghanistan,” said in a statement released Monday.

The statement added according to AJSC the level of violence against journalists has increased by 60 % in first six months of 2014.

In most cases, the government officials have been perpetrators of violence against journalists.

“The government of Afghanistan must seriously follow up the cases of violence against journalists,” said the EU Special Representative and Head of Delegation to Afghanistan, Franz-Michael Mellbin.

“Freedom of press has been one of the great achievements of Afghanistan over the past decade. This achievement must not be destroyed.”

“This is responsibility of Afghan government to ensure safety of journalists,” added, Franz-Michael Mellbin.
