Defense Ministry: Pakistan Shelling ‘Unacceptable’, Must be ‘Stopped’

Rocket and artillery shelling from Pakistan into Afghanistan territory is “unacceptable” and it must be “stopped”, the Afghan Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

Since last two days over 150 rockets being fired from Pakistan into border regions, killing and displacing a number of local families and villagers.

“The shelling from Pakistan is totally unacceptable for the government of Afghanistan and security forces,” the Defense Ministry Spokesman, Dawlat Waziri said. “The government has shared the issue with Pakistan and the United Nations and they seriously pursuing it.”

The shelling mainly being launched into eastern provinces of Afghanistan, particularly in Kunar province. Pakistan’s military acknowledges that the forces targeting militants in cross-border regions; however, Kabul denies the claims.

“The residents were being harmed, and concerned of the situation,” said Obaidullah Shinwari, a member of Kunar’s provincial council. “We urge the government to stop these attacks.”

Some senators, mainwhile, criticizing the government over failure to adopt a clear stand again Pakistan regarding the issue.

“It is not the first time that Pakistan not implemented its commitment, but it happened on number of occasions,” said Senator Rana Tareen.

Previously, the government has summoned Pakistani envoy on several occasions over the shelling issue, but it proved ineffective so far.
