A group of five gunmen attacked an army unit in PD5 of Kabul early on Monday, killing at least 11 soldiers and wounding 16.
The attack was launched at around 04:00 a.m. local time and ended after six hours.
Hours after the attack, Afghan defense ministry spokesman, Dawlat Waziri, told Ariana News that five insurgents were involved in the assault.
He added that two of the attackers were killed in the gun-battle, two detonated their suicide vests and one was arrested by Afghan forces.
Later in the day, the official confirmed that 11 soldiers were also killed and 16 others were injured during the clashes with the suicide assailants.
The so-called Islamic State also known as Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack.
This comes a day after Taliban insurgents detonated a car bomb in the heart of Kabul which left nearly 300 people dead or wounded.
