Canada recommits $465 million funding for Afghanistan

Canada announces $465 million in security support and development assistance in Afghanistan over a period of three years, the Canadian government announced Saturday at the conclusion of the NATO leaders’ summit.
The new commitment is a renewal of funding programs that are set to expire next year.
Earlier, Canada committed a total of $557 million towards an international fund to support security forces, including the fledgling Afghan army, and for Canadian-directed humanitarian and development projects.
According to a statement released by the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada the aid would “support women’s and girls’ rights and empowerment, and to help meet the basic needs of Afghans.”
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah met late Friday with Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada on the margins of the Warsaw summit.
This comes as the NATO allies approves to continue funding for Afghan security forces through 2020.
