A group of militants stormed a military base in the southern Helmand province early on Friday morning, officials said.
Abdul Hadi Tareen, commander of 215th Maiwand Corps said that the insurgents carried out the attack on Maiwand Corps inside Camp Shorab in the province today at around 02:00 am.
The provincial governor’s media office in a statement, meanwhile, said that the attack was ended at 07:20 pm.
According to the statement, at least 20 assailants were killed in the attack. Five Afghan security forces were also dead and 12 others wounded in the incident.
However, sources told Ariana News at least 35 people were killed in the attack.
The Taliban has taken responsibility for the attack, claiming that it has killed dozens of American and Afghan forces in the incident.
