Twelve Afghan policemen were killed and nine more were injured on Friday night in a Taliban attack in northern Helmand province, a source told Ariana News.
The incident happened when the insurgents attacked security check posts in Nawa district of the province.
A security source on condition of anonymity said that three members of special forces were also among the dead soldiers.
The Provincial Governor, Hayatullah Hayat, however, confirmed the death of five policemen in the incident.
According to the Provincial Governor, 17 Taliban militants were killed and four more were wounded in the clashes.
Taliban did not immediately comment regarding the report.
It comes as Nawa district of Helmand was recently recaptured by the government forces from the Taliban after nine months.
