Afghanistan wins seat at prestigious UN commission on status of women

Adela Raz, Afghanistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations said in a tweet Tuesday that Afghanistan has won a seat at the United Nations Commission on Status of Women. 

She said this is a four-year term – from 2021 to 2025.

Contenders for the seat were Afghanistan, India and China. Afghanistan secured 39 votes, India 38 and China 27. 

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. 

The CSW is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
