“An Afghan soldier shot and killed four American troops inside the base,” said Abdul Qahar Araam, spokesman for the Afghan Army’s 209th Corps. “We are investigating.”
NATO in Afghanistan rejected the occurrence of the incident, saying “we are aware of an incident that occurred at camp Shaheen in Mazar-e Sharif at 2 pm.”
“We can confirm there are no U.S. or NATO Resolute Support fatalities. U.S. soldiers have been wounded. One Afghan soldier was killed and one was wounded in the incident.” NATO said.
The U.S. military command in Kabul confirmed that it was “aware of an incident” at Camp Shaheen, which is the headquarters of the 209th Corps in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, but did not provide more details.
Such insider attacks have happened before in Afghanistan. Last week, an Afghan soldier has killed three Americans in an apparent insider attack in the highly contested Nangarhar province.
