(Last Updated On: July 4, 2017)

At least 55 Taliban militants, including the group’s 12 senior commanders were killed in the past 24 hours in joint operations in southern Helmand province.

The joint air and ground forces operations were conducted in Nawa and Marjah districts of the province that also wounded 38 Taliban insurgents, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

During the operation, Afghan forces seized nine vehicles, 18 motorcycles and two machine guns and destroyed some weapons, the statement added.

It comes as Helmand’s Nawa and Marjah districts have been under serious security threats of the insurgents, mainly the Taliban which is fully controlling Nawa district in the province.

Afghan local officials said that the security forces are edging closer to reclaim Nawa district which was fallen to the Taliban October last year.
