Interior Ministry to dismiss 70 security officials in Western Afghanistan

Fri Mar 30, 2:26 pm

Seventy security officials, including high and lower ranking officials, have been accused of illegal usage of their official authorities and bribery charges and will be dismissed in near future, the Afghan Interior Minister said on Thursday.

Afghan Interior Minister Bismillah Mohammadi has been in western Afghanistan to observe the security situation in Herat, Badghis and Ghor provinces. 15 high ranking generals of the ministry are accompanying him in this visit.

During the visit, interior minister observed that a number of police officials of western zone have violated laws and should be dismissed.  The officials who will be dismissed from their positions are mainly those who have misused their duties and have been involved in corruption and bribery.

According to the interior minister, “Reports from local people have observed officials who were seeking bribes and were involved in other corrupt practices.  Observations are that 70 police officials, including some high ranking officials, have violated laws and will be dismissed. These officials are charged with the abuse of duties, corruption, bribery and being irresponsible in performing their duties, he added.

While talking about the security situation of the western region, Mr. Mohammadi expressed concerns about the presence and activities of armed insurgents in Ghor. “The Interior ministry has taken measures eliminate or disarm them,” he said.

He stressed that the success of the security transition process depends on the training and organization of Afghan police.

“The number of police should be increase, so that we become able to take the security responsibilities for all of Afghanistan in the year 2013,” said Mr. Mohammadi. President Karzai has also said that the security transition process should be completed by the end of 2013.
