Hundreds of disabled persons protest in Nangarhar

Sun Sep 23, 1:55 pm

Hundreds of disabled persons gathered in a peaceful rally on Saturday in eastern Nangarhar province to demand timely payment of the amounts owed to them and to demand the restoration of their land from land usurpers.

The protestors said President Karzai a few years ago had promised plots to the disabled people but other powerful individuals had grabbed their lands in the town of Qasimabad.

The disabled protestors claim that the powerful individuals had taken various projects intended for martyrs and disabled people but those with disabilities had been deprived of the projects.

They claim their salaries have not been paid to them on time, and sometimes the amounts owed have been squandered by the local authorities.

A provincial council member Amir Mohammad also confirmed the claims of the disabled and accused the local officials of corruption.

Admitting some of the mentioned problems, the spokesman of the governor of Nangarhar said efforts were underway to overcome the problems.
