Heavy snowfall in Northern Afghanistan

Heavy snowfall has interrupted traffic in Northern Afghanistan and people are being waited for hours in extreme cold weather.

President of Takhar Disaster Management said that Chal and Rastaq districts’ highways are blocked due to snowfall. In addition, he said the cleanup process has started and the highways may be open to the night.

Although the snowfall has no major damages but the cold weather threatens the lives of various passengers who wait many hours for transport, he added.

Sayed Nasir Himat; Badakhshan Red Crescent director said that most districts’ roads are blocked and about 30 cm snow was recorded in some areas of Northern provinces.

On the other hand, local people and farmers express gladness with the snowfall and are hopeful that snowfall will prevent drought in coming year.

Farmers faced several problems due to insufficient rain and snowfall last year.

Afghanistan is an agricultural country and drought can be threat to the economy of Afghanistan as most Afghans are engaged in agriculture and livestock activities.
