4,865 cases of violence against women recorded last year

The Senate commission on women affairs and civil society on Sunday said violence against women had increased last year as 4,865 cases were recorded from over all the country.
The commission Chief Ms Sediqa Balkhi said during the last year (1390 Solar Year) the level of violence against women has had a notable increase as compared to previous years in the country.
Based on the reports, about 2947 cases of violence against women were recorded in 1387 Solar Year, 2745 in 1388, 2765 in 1389 and 4865 cases were recorded in 1390 solar year (2011).
Ms Balkhi criticizing the relevant offices said it took years to address a victim’s case when she visited the relevant institutions.
She said a number of women subjected to violence sheltered themselves in safe houses. According to her, these safe houses are the most secure places for the victims of violence.
But the minister of Justice Habibullah Ghalib opposes to these safe houses made for the affected women, saying most of the cases of violence against women happen in these safe houses.
Ghalib says the establishment of such safe house imitates the western culture.
The women’s rights activists and Interior Ministry officials say lack of law enforcement is the major source of increasing violence against women in Afghanistan.
The minister of women’s affairs Husn Bano Ghazanfar calls the roles of elders and religious scholars vital in dropping the level of violence against women in the country.
According to the experts, lack of knowledge of Islamic Laws, poverty, unemployment, forced marriages in younger ages and mental strains are the main factors of violence against women in Afghanistan.
