10 foreigners among 649 drug traffickers captured in last 3 months: MoI

Fri Jun 29, 1:43 pm

The Ministry of Interior Affairs has announced the arrest of 649 drug traffickers including 10 foreign nationals during the last three months across the country.

“During 1186 operations, nearly140 tones of heroin, morphine and chemicals were seized.  Also, 21 heroin processing factories have been destroyed and 11,000 acres of poppy fields have been cleared,” said Baaz Muhammad Ahmadi, Deputy Interior Minister for Counter Narcotics.

He said during this period ten foreigners were also detained on charges of producing and trafficking drugs.  Of the ten foreigners, 5 are from Pakistan; 3 are from Iran; and 2 are from Great Britain, according to reports.

Deputy Interior Minister for Counter Narcotics Ahmadi said that security problems, the relationship between mafia groups and terrorists, low capacity of police, lack of budgets for combating the problems, and a general lack of cooperation from local administrations are the main obstacles in the fight against drug production and trafficking.

If the capacity of anti-narcotics department of the ministry of interior affairs is not increased leading up to 2014, the process of fighting against drugs will face serious challenges, Ahmadi said.

This statement about successes in fighting drug traffickers and drug production comes following a recent  announcement from the UN that drug production in Afghanistan has increased by eleven percent this year.
