Clashes between Afghan forces and Taliban insurgents in Baghlan province closed the highway connecting the capital Kabul to the north of Afghanistan for seven hours to traffic on Wednesday, officials confirmed.
Security officials said the insurgents stormed the highway in Bagh-e-Shamal area of Buli Khumri, the capital of Baghlan province, last mid-night.
Early in the morning, provincial police spokesman, Zabihullah Shujee said efforts are underway to drive back insurgents.
Local residents told Ariana News that the clashes started at about 3pm last night. Fighting between the governmental forces and insurgents are still ongoing around the highway.
Initial reports suggest at least two women who are the residents of Baghlan were injured in the incident.
